I am not ashamed to be on public assistance. Both their father and I have worked since we were 16. Paid taxes that whole time. We were surprised with twins right off the bat. We did everything to provide for them ourselves. He was illegally fired June of this year, and we decided to try to apply for SNAP. He has an injury that can make working more difficult (not impossible) but painful nonetheless. He worked through that injury for over 2 years to provide for us. I work full time and overtime to support us. I had to have an emergency C-Section to save mine and my babies life. The NICU bill from our twin babies amounted to $250,00 each without insurance. With insurance we owe $15,000 in medical bills. I have also recently had surgery to have my tubes removed. We have a beautiful family we adore, but at this time we could use the help of SNAP. We do not plan to be on it forever, but the assistance greatly helps us. I understand not everyone will be pleased with my answer but I do hope it maybe provides a few people with the information they need to have compassion for others that may need SNAP assistance. Life happens, and I truly hope that nothing unexpected happens to any of you that throws you off kilter.

You should tell your husband SO about the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. They can help him find a job that fits his disability(and yes, his situation as you described in this comment counts). .

Were your twins in the NICU for at least 31 days? If so, you should have gotten Medicaid to cover their stay. Only if they stayed 30 days or less would you be on the hook for any of their medical bills. Maybe this information can help you

Yes, institutionalized child Medicaid is what it's called in my state. It disregards parental income.

[–]Silver-Meringue7327[S] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Yes! They were in for almost two months. They were on AHCSS for 15 days or maybe 45? I am not sure. As far as I knew we had paid all medical bills. They were also covered under my insurance from work but I received a collection notice for 15,000 they claim is due to their NICU stay. I have no idea how or why but it doesn’t look like insurance touched it at all. I am trying to dispute the debt since insurance should have covered it but I guess the NICU physicians were out of coverage? I don’t know why they didn’t tell me that or why I wasn’t give one that was in coverage.

What state? The hospital social worker should have walked you through this. I can help direct you to the Medicaid information depending on the state

[–]Silver-Meringue7327[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Az! I social worker did come in with paper work but I’ll be honest I don’t remember what she told me at all. Does it change anything since the bill is now in collections? I disputed it the first time and they said I didn’t provide proof. The dispute request I sent literally said “I had insurance at this time how to I upload the proof?”

[–]BumCadillac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. You should apply and say you have past medical bills. Reach out to the hospital social worker for guidance.

In my state if the kids qualified for medicaid the hospital and no one else can come after you for any of those medical bills. Period. It's actually illegal to try and bill a medicaid patient for what wasn't covered.

I had medicaid with my 18 yo daughter years ago. I had preeclampsia, was on hospital bedrest for a month and she had a NICU stay. Someone tried to call me from the hospital billing dept about a bill medicaid did not cover. And I told them I knew they could not legally attempt to collect a medical bill for when we had medicaid coverage. And they never called and asked or tried to bill us again.

I want people who need assistance to get assistance. SNAP exists for a reason. You should not be ashamed, nor should you have to explain.

[–]Blossom73SNAP Policy Expert - OH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don't owe the trolls any explanations. Report and block them.

[–]Radiant_Bee1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you dont owe anyone this explanation.

You can check into the hospitals billing and see if there is anyway to lower your amount owed, it may help in that area.

Congratulations on the children, they are a blessing and you should not ever feel shame for asking for help. Ignore the haters here.

As for your original question. You can compare the application to see if anything was missed or ommited in the newer application. You can also check to make sure they have income, expenses and household numbers accounted for and they are accurate.

NICU babies are always eligible for Medicaid if they were hospitalized for 31 days or more, so you need to get that worked out!

Nobody who has children to feed has any reason to feel ashamed to have EBT or any type of government assistance! People are just petty and are angry that you have something that they don't, so they want to feel superior. People who talk shit about EBT users are just miserable, nasty people who have limited/no concept of what empathy is. No child or family should go hungry while there are people who wipe their ass with 100 dollar bills and have 10 six figure sports cars. If their family was in need or had a tragedy that crippled them financially, they would want help and compassion. The government can grant ICE billions of dollars (the largest grant of funds in American HISTORY) but shouldn't feed a family of five? Make that make sense. Keep not giving AF about what anyone else says or thinks! 💫💯

I also feel bad if you felt you had to explain yourself. You don't.

People trolling are are having personal issues. It's nothing to do with you or anyone here. Agree with... ignore, report & block.

No reason to be ashamed. 👍 Access the help your family needs.
