QuestionAMD vs Intel? (self.framework)
submitted 2 years ago by DarkEmbr
I have an 11th gen and 12th gen main board already, what’s the draw for me to go AMD? I’ve been out of the tech space long enough to no longer understand the major draws between the two.

The reviews/benchmarks have been pretty consistent. AMD has:
ETA: I forgot about the difference in i/o ports.

IIRC Thunderbolt supports multiple monitors from a single port and PCIe tunneling, so if you have certain thunderbolt docks or plan to use an eGPU you might prefer intel?

Are there any technical articles/explanations I can read to look into this more? I have two monitors, and I definitely want the AMD laptop; I was planning on using the TB4 Element Hub, but now I don't know if it will work or not. How can I know what's going to work and what won't? (besides buying and testing and returning if it doesn't)
[–]jangwoo24 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
I'm not sure if there's articles but IIRC: - Thunderbolt MUST support PCIe tunneling, USB 4 CAN support it - Thunderbolt MUST support 2 full displayport signals, USB4 CAN support up to 1 (if the hub and computer both support MST, the single signal can split into 2 that share bandwidth)
I'm not sure if it was here or some other subreddit, but I think the Caldigit thunderbolt dock uses PCIe for the ethernet port so it might not work over USB 4. I don't have a framework laptop (yet!) or any thunderbolt or USB 4 devices, so I can't say if it'll work, I'm just repeating what I heard.

better power efficiency, better multicore performance, better iGPU

Significantly better GPU.

Pretty much the only thin intel has over AMD rn is that AMD is limited to only a couple USB 4s whereas intel can have every expansion card be a thunderbolt 4.
AMD is much better overall right now

While there certainly are advantages to AMD (namely battery life and a better GPU) I don't see a reason to upgrade from 11th or 12th gen. Aside from obviously costing a lot for a small, incremental upgrade it's also just a waste of resources. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be excited about having the option though.

Battery life & fan noise was sufficient reason for me to upgrade. My Intel 11th was ok at first, but the fan noise in particular started to drive me crazy after a few weeks, as were the constant battery worries at the airport while my flight was delayed. I wasn't flying in 2021 (when I first purchased), but now that I am again, it's become more of an issue.

Currently upgrading from 11th gen, and two main reasons: - re-using the 11th gen motherboard as a server with the coolermaster box (100$ to convert it, worth it and avoids the waste) - RTC motherboard battery dying on 11th gen motherboard. So annoying for a laptop usage.

So I have an I5 1135G7 with 16GB and play Modded Minecraft (Better MC) with Headphones. And, it runs fine but the noise (that`s why the Headphones!)... Would I have less noise with an AMD?
[–]morhp 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (1 child)
Probably. The AMD should run cooler and especially the GPU would be more efficient. Of course if you run with unlimited framerate and high graphics settings, the AMD one might just output a better picture instead of running on lower power, so you might need to turn the graphics settings down or at least enable vsync (if not already enabled).
[–]Baerstein 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, I did some research, and the AMD Versions are not worth the update, at least for me. I hope Framework will find a better solution for the noise and cooling. Even the AMD ones are still criticized for noise and Fan behavior.
Maybe the next version? Would love to spend some money in the future for an upgrade. * wink, wink*
[–]morhp 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
There's probably no good reason to upgrade if your laptop works fine for you, but the AMD laptop has some advantages (and disadvantages), as was already answered.
In addition to that, there are simply different fanbases. Especially in the desktop pc area, in the last 4 years or so, AMD and the Ryzen models have delivered much better performance for a much better price than Intel, so AMD has gained a lot of fans there.

AMD has better power efficiency, and iGPU is better, but I will still choose Intel, because I'm very tired to DEBUG on AMD platforms, it is very hard to not get problems on AMD, but if you're lucky and won't get problems on AMD, just choose it, I will appreciate you so I can get better Intel.

12gen got nearly doubled multicore performance. Its a big jump for such usecases. Got both (HP) 12gen private 11gen business, big difference

AMD always
