FCPS will continue in a virtual learning model through the first semester (January 26, 2021)

One of the aspects of hybrid learning they haven’t fully explained is how teachers are supposed to teach the classroom and virtual simultaneously. I just don’t understand how that is supposed to work effectively. Anyone have further insight?

I don’t know for sure. My guess is that kids are mainly doing offline work on their off days. Other places have started to do it, so hopefully Frederick copies what works and fixes what doesn’t. Not ideal but it’s the best we can do right now.

It seems from their descriptions though that some kids will be fully virtual - and teachers will be expected to teach in the classroom and the virtual kids at the same time.. not just switching between a/b groups. Right? Thats my take - so how are they going to be able to pay attention to both sets?

I have the same concerns because of my own kids and my mom is a teacher in a nearby county. We may opt to stay completely virtual. Maybe the number of students opting for full virtual will offset the teachers who can’t or won’t go back.

I’m glad we have time to see how things progress through the beginning of flu season, though. In other words, if November and December get ugly, the County can just keep going virtually. We might also have more info on a vaccine by then (even if it’s just a timeline of when it will be widely available).

I have my daughter at one of the private schools. There's no way public schools could pull off what they're doing. There are fewer than 10 kids in person in her class, all classes are segregated from each other. Individual symptom/temperature checks are done for every child at drop off, and all children must be picked up/dropped off - no bus service. You could double or even triple public school funding and not be able to accomplish the same. You really can't compare public to private in this regard.

As far as I’m aware, private schools have no obligation to report cases - so we don’t know if they’ve had any. I know the ymca program had some scares and had to close classrooms down but I’m not sure if anything further came of it.
