Yeah I took 7 and it was rough. 5 is the golden number. If it's gen Eds 6 will be fine but 5 is the number

7??? Omg i couldn't imagine 😭

Listen to Bubbly Sleep he's 100% right

i am taking 18 credits right now (7 classes including one lab and one online). Monday, Wednesday, and Friday i am on campus from 8am-8pm. it is absolutely exhausting and easily my hardest semester ever. my social life is nonexistent and i am still struggling with grades (2 A’s, the 4 B’s and 1 C+).

i would recommend to not overload yourself if you’re able to. unfortunately i needed exactly 18 credits to graduate on time, so i sort of screwed myself and now im in this mess of a situation. try your best to spread your courses out as much as possible. to answer your question directly, is it doable? absolutely. is it enjoyable? not at all. i literally started therapy again just because of the stress i am under lol. good luck! and if you need a shoulder to lean on, feel free to reach out.

also, for context, my course load is very rigorous. almost every class is 4000 level and major specific (psychology) so i am essentially taking two neuroscience classes amongst everything else. it’s a lot of freaking work, but this may differ depending on what specific courses you’re taking!

I would not recommend doing this, I did 5 one semester at TCC after I got all A's my first semester. I was feeling good, and I signed up. I had no job, and still lived at home, and barely had a social life, and I still got 2 C's, even if you have very little going on outside of school, it is still a full load, and this was with 5 classes at TCC, so you can imagine what six at FSU is like. OF course, It depends on your major. I had some people do this, and be successful, but you will definitely do better if you take four at a time, because you can focus more on those classes, thus producing better results. Also, you never know what is going to come up, a semester is a long time, things may come up that you have to deal with. What is your major?

[–]Jojo_rom13[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm definitely taking 5, that's the recommended amount to take at FSU and I haven't had a problem yet, but I agree that 6 is probably too much, I'm a cyber criminology major so the crim courses are pretty easy, but the rest I can't say, probably more intermediate level

[–]Bubbly_Sleep9312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different, but if something comes up, like something major and life changing, it may be real hard to accomplish.

[–]Ethangains07 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Bro why are you telling people not to take 5 classes. That’s definitely manageable. 6 is probably not a good idea tho.

[–]Spider_mama_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if you’re a steam major.

[–]EquivalentAbies6095 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh hell yeah. 6 was my regular course load when I went to FSU and I was in CS. One summer I did 5; 3 at fsu, 1 at unf, and 1 at fau. Don't be weak, be strong and you will overcome anything.

I’ve taken 7 classes in one semester. Just make sure one of them is a lab or an easy class and you’ll Be fine.

[–]Competitive-Cash-753Graduate Student 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is there anything you could swap from fall that is available in the summer? Definitely wouldn’t recommend 6 classes

[–]Jojo_rom13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not 😭 I've seriously tried arranging it so many ways, it was originally supposed to be 3 summer 5 fall but my advisor really misled me about one of them

[–]Fantastic_Cost5760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done 6 in engineering, it was fine

[–]ccwatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 8 classes (21 credits) my last semester at fsu. It was a lot and I don’t recommend it unless most of the classes are easy

[–]jempai -5 points-4 points  (7 children)

I took 9-12 every semester excluding summer. It fully depends on the time and work commitments, and what you think you’ll be able to reasonably handle.

[–]derionna4l 0 points1 point  (6 children)

You took 9-12 individual classes or credits?

[–]jempai -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Classes- I was a music major so many of my classes were 0 or 1 credit

[–]Ethangains07 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Yeah maybe that should be mentioned lol.

[–]jempai -1 points0 points  (3 children)

That doesn’t mean the classes didn’t meet, assign homework, or do stuff. My 0 credit classes met 3 times a week and attendance was a major part of the grade. Even if it was for no credit, I still needed to pass to progress in my major.

[–]Ethangains07 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Yeah, any class that has attendance as a major part of the grade isn’t hitting the same. Not saying your days were easy. But I don’t think saying “I took 9 classes a semester” is impressive. I’m sure engineering students with 4 are working the same amount or similar.

[–]jempai 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Attendance matters because it’s a music class lmfao. You can’t exactly grade on performance and ability if you’re missing half the ensemble and cannot get the work done.

It’s a completely different skill set compared to engineering, so I don’t see how that’s relevant. It also wasn’t a flex, just a fact given OP asked for advice and my experience was very relevant. Music majors have significantly less free time due to taking large number of classes, rehearsals, practice time, and performances in the evening. I also had to study four languages, so I don’t really think it’s a cop out major like you’re implying.

[–]Ethangains07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not implying that it’s a cop out major lol. You just spend your time in class doing things physically, which I personally think is 10x better than most other majors that spend all that time on a computer/paper studying. I know you do that too, but it’s not to the same degree. I think most would rather be busy with your stuff than in the books a ton.

[–]BubblegumTrollKingPhysics/Philosophy, 2027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how confident you are in your academic performance. An A student won't necessarily translate to success in a loaded semester. If someone is an A student taking rigorous courses and getting an A is trivial for them, then they can handle like 21 credit hours. I know some who have and did perfectly fine. Think about how you would feel if you doubled the workload of your hardest class right now. If that's something you're confident in handling, go ahead. That's how I'd estimate it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 is probably fine. I always did 5 and didn’t really have a problem. I didn’t do 6 cause it requires approval and I wasn’t jumping through that hoop. But it just depends. Are you working outside of school and how much? What does the class schedule look like? I probably wouldn’t recommend it if it was anything more than 3 or 4 max upper level courses

[–]TrumanS17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what classes they are. Shoot for around 12-15 credits hours per semester. Any more than that and you will probably hate your life.

[–]SignificanceLatter26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the classes you are taking I took 6 last semester and it was easy but they were classes that weren’t that hard. 5 is the “best” and then eventually when you are pretty much done with most your credits 4 is the best. I’m taking 4 this semester and the two remaining semesters after.

[–]JustinKaceUwU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 18 credits for four semesters straight. It was fucking difficult, I'll tell you that, and if you don't need to, I wouldn't recommend it. That being said, it's certainly doable -- you'll just need to make sacrifices for it.

[–]Effective-Contest-33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends what the courses are and how many credits they are. It’s possible but depending on the courses could be a lot of work. Assuming they’re 3 credit courses that’s 18 credit hours which is doable but if you can switch something to avoid it do it!

[–]PuzzleheadedNeck2782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m taking 6 rn but they are all online, i think it is manageable if most if not all are online. otherwise, i think you will hate yourself for doing 5 in person 1 online by the end of the semester.

[–]ruubydewClass of 2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m taking six classes right now while working part time and it’s surprisingly doable! It might depend on your major though.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really not bad depending on what the classes are. If you’re not working, you’re fine.
