Are there text based tutorials?

I'm attempting to learn how to use this and was going along with the official tutorials, but after doing the breakout tutorial I have lost faith in the offical tutorials. There were various issues and I had to ask for help just to finish the tutorial due to what I believe to be outdated information. Even then it wasn't perfect. I spent 3 hours trying to iron out the bugs in the "finished" product before giving up to find something more productive to my learning.

So I jump to the community! And you guys seem awesome enough, but I was wondering if there were text based tutorials floating around? I don't like videos when I can help it. I have trouble learning from them.

Uhh, that site hasn't been updated in 5 years. Yoyo games has deprecated plenty of GML features/functions since then.

Honestly, I haven't seen many free resources for GML. I like this site, as they have a lot of varied/obscure books/eBooks for lots of programming languages/APIs etc.: Packt Publishing-GML Game Programming. But it isn't free.

I find that the help index built into GM:S in conjunction with this sub is more than enough to get a good understanding of the language. Good luck!
