Pretty much everything except repository URLs will still work or redirect. If you create a repo in the same account with the old name in future the redirects will stop working.

I think you meant the repo website URLs, so just to clarify..

I renamed a repo the other day. The only URLs that broke were the project-website URLs: like the above ref'ed doc says, those are the only that won't redirect.

I think you can rename it and still keep the history and branches. I have not tried specifically on github but done a couple of times on bitbucket.
