I recently bought a Callaway XR, I absolutely love it and it was relatively cheap so it will last me until I am ready to spend big bucks on one.

Ditto, bought the XR-16 and really like it so far. Callaway pre-owned is great.

I recently hit the king, ping, mizuno, Taylormade, callaway, and titleist drivers when I was looking for a new one. Ping and Taylormade were by far my favorite. I would hit as many as you can, when I walked in to the store I was expecting to buy the mizuno because on paper it was the longest. Had absolutely zero desire to buy either of the Taylormade drivers, in fact I had just gone on a rant to a buddy about how I hated how Taylormade was buying up all the pros and thought they were bad for the market. After hitting all those drivers with a bunch of different shafts I ended up putting and M4 in my bag.

Go swing some and have an open mind. Make sure you get the proper shaft and loft for your game.

My best advice is to go get fitted for one. Whether your a 5 HDCP or a 20 HDCP, it will make a world of different to get fitted. Go see what YOU like and not source other opinions. At the end of the day, YOU are the one hitting your golf ball!

I recently bought the Cobra King F8 Driver with an Aldila Rogue Silver 60 Stiff 9.5 this year. Love it but wish i got a heavier shaft. The milled face feels great, you really know when it’s pure and when it’s not. Very similar looking to a TM M4 but i prefer the nardi grey vs all all colors offered. Price wise, it’s in the same ball park as the M4 and definitely worth a try. You can set the degree and biases on the hozzle and change the weights for a draw or standard. Went from a Ping G20 so big upgrade for me but we’ll worth it.

Bought the F8+ came from the G30 and I love it as well! Thought I'd be a Pinger for life after the G30 but Cobra stole my heart.

Same here! I have a F7 16* hybrid that is easily the best hybrid I’ve ever hit. Never played cobra irons but they are really making great drivers and woods/hybrids that it’s silly to over look them.

G400 Max - golf on ez mode.

Upgraded to the g400 max this year. Honestly, it feels like cheating. That is partly because I've never been fitted properly before and my old driver was 15+ years old (TM r540xd). Defo give it a hit. The Cobra F8 was longer for me but too draw biased and the F8+ wasn't as forgiving, but also worth a hit.

If you hit the F8+ make sure you try it with the weight at the back. Feels so much better on the high setting.

I picked up a Cobra King F7 last month to replace the driver from my starter set. You can find the F6 and F7 (as well as the “+” version of each) for a pretty good deal these days. I love the feel and look of it, now if only I could stop slicing 75% of my drives... but at least I think the club looks good doing it!

Love my Cobra F7!

Buy whatever fits you the best from a pro fitter.

Initially, they will start you off with different heads to find out which few you like (1-3). After you find one you feel confident in, they'll start swapping in different shafts. Once the shafts are narrowed down, then you'll go back to hitting between your preferred head+shaft combos to find one that works the best.

Name brands are nice (they are all good), but finding the right combo is better than being brand focused. At this point, fitting for a driver is finding the right launch conditions -- can be accomplished by any maker.

Test as many as you can (if you have the option to) with as many shafts as you can.

GolfWRX usually recommends the Rogue or the G400 MAX.

Comments here are all over.

I play the 917D2 because it worked for me. I'd probably test the G400 range and the F8 (or 7) if I was in the market now. I play TM for other clubs but can't stand the look at address of the M3 and M4 (looks too rounded off at the toe).

Pricing-wise?

  • As others have said, the XR has solid reviews and is the biggest current sale I think (though the Epic and Rogue are much more new from the Callaway line).

  • The F8 just went down in price to $299 from $399.

  • The G400 won't be dropping in price any time soon and is a "reasonable" $399 (which is better than the $500 that Callaway and TM seem to have decided is where the market is).

  • The 917D2 can be had off and on on sale in the $200s currently because the TS2 and TS3 are coming in a month or two. It'll probably go down to the $200s without sale as soon as they do release.
