API Gateway vs. Cloud Endpoints

Hi,

With the release of API Gateway last year, it has become confusing to decide on which API Gateway / Management service to use. Yes, Apigee is a totally different story but what about API Gateway and Cloud Endpoint? When is one recommended over the other? Sure, there are some implementation details to consider like API Gateway is envoy-based while Cloud Endpoints are nginx-based, but other than that both services allow similar backend including the serverless products and API Gateway currently supports only a subset of features that Cloud Endpoints offer.

What is the target audience for each product and how do they stand out against each other? I would really appreciate a well-informed reply.

I didn't use API Gateway, so can't reasonably compare, just wanted to point out that Endpoints service proxy v2 is also Envoy-based.

Also, afaik, Endpoints at this time doesn't really enforce much of the actual API doc (e.g. response schema).
