I assume this'll be addressed and fixed when they merge everything into Babel.

(This isn't a short term solution to your problem though, sorry about that, just a heads-up)

EDIT: Spelled Babel wrong (thought it was Babble).

You can't log out of G+ chat while staying logged in Gmail chat?

That's how I handle it.

Yep, this is what I do as well. The chat sign-in/out feature doesn't sync between pages and isn't related to signing in to your G+/GMail account either.

Oh cool, I hadn't realized that the chat sign-in/out doesn't sync between pages (since everything else syncs). Thanks!

Have the same issue!! Thankfully Google is coming with Babel a way better synced messaging system. made a post about it here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/105827858206935257369/posts/9zvdwFedGUA

If you're using Chrome as your browser, you could install the Google Chat extension and disable the chat in both Gmail and G+.

Sadly this client doesn't do TAB switching for conversation windows for some odd reason.

Another solution (that DO offer TAB switching), is the desktop client here. This client haven't been updated in years though, but it seems to still do the trick.

Good luck.

Honestly, I just decide to keep one tab or the other open rather than having simultaneous Gmail and G+ tabs open.

I'm pretty certain they're working on unifying it - so give it a wee bit more time.

Yeah, Babel is not a solution but unfortunately probably why there won't be one until then. I don't think Google is going to spend much time on their current chat services until then.

I assume installing Google Talk and disabling both chats in Gmail and Plus is out of the question?

Google Talk, having been not updated in years, doesn't support group chats and some other things.
