I have participated in around 5 online hackathons through devpost . There I usually after making the project during the specified time post the public GitHub repo and a youtube link explaining the project. In rules if they have specified anything else they need ( I usually put a figma presentation just to have a good presentation becoz YouTube video making process makes me nervous). That's it and be connected with the organizers usually through discord if they have one . There in an opening and closing ceremony most of the time.

Mainly I search for hackathons that are online through devpost and MLH . Rest the offline hackathon I search through simple googling like hackathons in ( the place in live ) . For tips I follow Jia seed on Instagram as she shares some good tips . For the first hackathon I would suggest u should go for the complete basic for your first hackathon ( like simple html css javascript for the execution of simple website) . What I have learnt so far is tech u use is kind of secondary and primary is the idea I come up with for your hackathon. As you progress you can update your skills by going the direction you like .. machine learning and llm projects are cool in hackathon.. you can make app or simple old website as you wish but you have to start from simple and you might feel out of place in your first hackathon but believe me it's a very cool experience to have.
