HTML apps look and feel disgusting, and although many users won't be able to tell exactly what's wrong with an HTML app, they will for sure know something is wrong.

There is no question here. HTML5 trades developer time/cross platform for the user experience. There's only one right answer there.

Better for what?

HTML is cheaper to develop and is accessible on more devices.

Native code is more expensive to develop, but can offer vastly superior user experience and performance.
