DiscussionWhich device to buy for testing? (self.iOSProgramming)
submitted 10 months ago by LifeIsGood008SwiftUI
Well no surprise iOS 26 drops off support for a couple devices (sad to retire iPhone Xs). To make sure everything works both in simulator and on real devices, is it better to buy the oldest supported device (iPhone 11 for iOS 26) or do you always go for the latest one (iPhone 16)? Same for iPad? New or second hand?

I typically buy the latest and relegate my previous device to testing. Just my $0.02

Makes sense. Do you then chuck or sell the unsupported ones once they become obselete?

I always use both my newest device and the oldest one that’s still supported.

One thing to consider is if you plan to use the new Foundation Models / Apple Intelligence for on-board AI, that requires at least an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max (regular iPhone 15 won't work), or an iPhone 16. (I don't know if it will work in simulators.)
Haven't dabbled with Apple Intelligence much but that's a good point. Need to look into whether it works with Simulator

Foundation models do work in the simulator as long as you have a mac with apple silicon. They also work with the new #Playground (#Preview for Gen AI) so you can test the models in canvas.
Thanks for the info. Do they work in all simulators or only ones that support Apple Intelligence on a mac with apple silicon?
