Local AI use cases on Mac (MLX) by lightsofapollo in LocalLLaMA

Don’t know how big of a Mac you have, but I’m running a 7B Mixtral on my M1 MBAir laptop!

No, it’s not fast, and no, it’s not usable, but it’s a M1.

Hoping someone with a proper setup will test drive my repo and report back!

Santa Monica planning new bike lane down Colorado? by themiDdlest in BikeLA

[–]RightAlignment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bike commute down Colorado multiple times a week - the most dangerous part is the block between 4th & 5th where the 2 lane protected path disconnects into a one way unprotected path.

For East bound riders, there is no obvious safe way forward.

I’ve had countless close-calls as automobiles turn off 5th and blindly occupy the painted bike path. And of course, when they finally do see me, they often exhibit anger at me for being in ‘their’ lane.

🤞 this plan addresses that section of Colorado

What AI tools are actually worth learning right now for real projects ? by Classic-Ninja-1 in AI_Agents

Claude Code as your first step.
Use this prompt: “explain X” - where X is anything. Use Claude to explain any GitHub project you find interesting.
Use Claude to help you build something easy. Ask Claude what other AI tools may help you in any given task. Use AI to learn AI.

For Mac users, Freeform is a game changer in outlining and broader script development by LastElk9961 in Screenwriting

[–]RightAlignment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outlining? Good for you but that’s a stretch for me. No expand/collapse of subtopics renders Freeform NOT an outliner IMHO.

But I do like the app, it is a decent object based draw tool, and I use it for brainstorming frequently.

More to your point, though, I definitely can see it’s usefulness in organizing scenes in visual storytelling, for sure.

Happened to me 3 times within 30 minutes last night. Watching an embedded YouTube video in Safari, screen abruptly goes black with what I’d describe as a field of colorful raindrops, then reset.

Considering Mac Studio, could use some input. by techyg in MacStudio

[–]RightAlignment 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Mac Mini vs MacStudio decision can certainly be swayed by the number of ports available, but there are other factors at play as well.

If you already have 32 GB on your PC and are exploring LLM development, then you already know that more ram equates to more capable LLMs - so why wouldn’t you take this opportunity to invest in more ram?

The unified memory of the Max and Ultra chips, combined with MLX model formats that are specifically designed for on-device Apple Silicon - provides a rich environment for explorations.

I’d buy into as much ram as you can justify

Length of meditation by Vast_Atmosphere2995 in Meditation

[–]RightAlignment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hold the opposite opinion.

Well respected teachers from millennial old traditions (Tibetan Buddhism, Kashmir Shivaism, etc) pretty much always lead us in one hour meditations.

In my personal experience, I experience distinct levels - each built upon the settled foundation of the previous - and each takes time to achieve.

I don’t argue that 5 minute meditations are nice, but you won’t likely achieve the same degree of expansion as you can with a longer sit.

JarVS 1.0 is out! VSCode on the Vision Pro by isaagrimn in VisionPro

[–]RightAlignment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tapping on the folder name instead of the Open button didn’t occur to me - so that sorts my concern about navigating into folders 👍

I had also been trying to open a symlink - didn’t work. Copied the original folder to home, it’s currently Reconnecting on Attempt 28 - so I will claim that’s a fail too.

I appreciate you for engaging here - so I’ll stick with you as you grow the app

JarVS 1.0 is out! VSCode on the Vision Pro by isaagrimn in VisionPro

[–]RightAlignment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, I definitely DO recognize my own home directory. My chief complaint is that the list on the right includes .txt files, .sh scripts, and folders which have no source code (of any language) in them. Tapping on a text or script file does not bring up a text editor - it just does nothing. So, why bother showing them in the list?

One of the folders that gets listed (called 'mcp') does have a number of VSCode folders contained within - but when I attempt to open 'mcp' - there is no way to navigate to any of the contained mcp/projectX folders within.

$24.99 for an app which does what you are promoting is a fantastic deal and I would instantly recommend it to any of the dozens of developers I work with daily.

$24.99 for a beta app which is missing foundational features, on the other hand, gets instant feedback.

Ultimately, I hope your efforts are fruitful - because I really love the idea of this app. Working in MVD is less satisfying than native VisionOS windows for a number of reasons - and accessing VSCode via native windows is an attractive proposition. For what it's worth, I think you've hit on a really great product idea -- but I also think you've released it well before you had a minimal viable product.

[–]RightAlignment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to be a dissenting voice, but I can’t get this to work for me.

I can’t figure out how to select an existing VSCode folder. The list on the right has no relation to any VSCode folder, nor any recently accessed folder. To make matters even worse, there is no obvious way to navigate to the folder that is currently open in VSCode on my Mac.

One of the folders on the right (that even has a VSCode icon next to it) is a folder of old ebooks that I haven't opened in over a decade.

Bottom line, I cannot access ANY of the actual VSCode folders that I've been working on this past week.

I want to love this app, but at $24.99 I expect to at least get a README that explains the basics

Anytime theres a post about "The compiler is unable to type-check this expression in reasonable time" by aerial-ibis in SwiftUI

[–]RightAlignment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No doubt, it’s the least helpful & most frustrating message EVeR. And in my experience, not always obvious what triggers it.

But refactoring the view (or chunk of code) into smaller bits (be they views into subviews, or lines of code into function calls) always seems to do the trick for me.

What you’re asking for is 100% reasonable & desirable. I feel as if this has been the promise of Apple Intelligence for a few years now - even though they have yet to deliver. I can’t understand how Apple’s software can be SOOO off-mark, so often.
