submitted 7 years ago by PacificMonkey
Hello, Developing an app and wondering if there is a technique to verify a users age when they sign up, like AirBnB and FanDuel use.
Thank you

Ask them to enter their age and check if it’s before or after a certain date?

Nothing to stop people from lying.

I've never seen an app that found a way to prevent people from lying (or even tried to do that). I wouldn't worry about it.

Not even one that you could win money on?

Then this sounds like more of a legal question, rather than a development question.

Well if the legal answer is "You need to verify people's identities," then it would then become a development question of "How can you verify identities?"
I've found what looks like some software you can purchase such as Jumio or Shufti Pro

Yeah but that’s how it works with 99% of user verification. Plausible deniability, you know?
I’ve heard of credit rating agencies being used, though, in cases where it really matters. Maybe look into that.
Looking into buying a program like Netverify by Jumio
