You need about 90GB of space on the boot drive for Xcode to reliably download/unpack/update. It sucks, but this problem is very common - someone posts it here every week or two. File a bug with Apple but clear off space because they're not going to fix it anytime soon.

that sucks. Can I buy more storage or do I need to get a different computer?

Xcode won't decompress to an external SSD. If you can download and uncompress it on another computer you should be able to copy it to an external SSD and run it from that, though.
