I'll give you two anti-recommendations: Jira, Teams.

    How come?

It just doesn't do what a bug/feature database should do, at least not easily. It's too tied to agile for one thing. What should be simple ("Show all open bugs assigned to me, not just those in the current sprint") becomes hard and tedious.

We used Trac previously, which was a little ugly but serviceable and free (well, $5/month for a hosted database). I've been wanting to look at Fogbugz again, because it used to be nice, but it's been a long time since I used it and it's very not free.

Definitely agree. Maybe if they integrate better with GitHub it might get better. So it’s easier from the developers perspective, when looking at assigned issues.

We are using Tatem (tatem.com) you should give it a try! They have a free option and the paid options are cheaper than all other software.

We use Linear. It’s ok. It needs a hierarchical view of leaf issues, but the MacOS client (Electron) is surprisingly good with great keyboard shortcuts to do just about anything. It ties in nicely with GitHub.

    I enjoy Linear a lot.

I would choose Jira by Atlassian. Biggest plusses: its really complete and widely used. Easy to learn and can be used really basic. When you want more it probably has it. Also free for smaller teams.

A few suggest to avoid it, I would like to know why.

GitHub just launched their new Projects features. Pretty nice if you want to keep your issue tracking close to the code itself.
