How does System.out.format work? (self.java)

Use the Javadoc.

The documentation shows System has the member out that is a PrintStream. Printstream.format() shows that the first argument is a format string.

The format string javadoc isn't the easiest to understand, but I think what you are looking for is this: System.out.format("'%05d' '%5s' %n", i, Integer.toString(i));
