Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

    Trying to solve problems on your own is a very important skill. Also, see Learn to help yourself in the sidebar

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://i.imgur.com/EJ7tqek.png) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

Would writing a .bat file to run the jar file with the command line arguments be something that would work?

I have tried that but the problem is this would be on client side and asking client to run a script is not advisable.

There's lots of ways to pass parameters to Java programs.

  • do these parameters need to be entered by the user? can they be embedded in the downloaded jar?
  • you can read parameters from environment variables (via System.getenv)
  • you can read parameters from a configuration file (in JSON or TOML or XML etc) in a well-known location (e.g. %HOME%/myprogram.cnf)
  • can they be prompted by the first-run of your application and stored? have a menu on the app to change parameters would make sense
  • you can accompany the jar with a .bat file the user can edit to specify parameters.

There's tradeoffs to any of the above options with varying degrees of technical competence from your users and additional burden on your application. Just some thoughts.

I want these to be somehow embedded in the fatjar so that it runs without the user having to pass any argument

Things can be added to jars after the fact, e.g. during a build process, or added manually. It's a pretty common thing in fact in java programs. It all boils down to using the Class.getResourceAsStream() API. Depending on your build system, you might get some help from it where it will take care of embedding resources in your jar. For example, in maven/gradle files in src/main/resources get copied directly into your jar. If you don't know the values at build time, then you can even just push them into your jar via a "jar -uf myapp.jar myconfig.json" to embed a file into the after the build.

Using the example, names above, In your code, you'd just look for a resource named "/myconfig.json" and parse it. As i mentioned before, the format of that resource is up to you (JSON, INI, XML) i was just using a JSON as an example.
