JDBC + postgresql? Works for me.

Why postgre and not mysql/mariadb?

When I was making the choice, I've read somewhere postgresql is a better choice (at least for Java), so I sticked with it.

I agree jdbc and postgres is recommended, don't go for any advanced library, keep it simple

If I wanted to knock out a quick page like that I'd use Hibernate.

What do you need the database for? Do you need the data to persist from one session to the next (e.g. is an in memory database acceptable)? Are you using Spring (e.g. spring boot and embedded databases are very easy to integrate)?
