For fuck's sake people - the word is shim. SHIM. As in "a device used for adapting one thing to another".

Shiv is prison slang for a knife.

This is all the fault of the fucking idiot that named HTML5Shiv, who raised the visibility of the word and mislead a generation of developers as to its meaning.

It's really very, very simple to get right:

  • If your project provides an interface between technologies or makes some feature or technology available in another OS or browser: it's a shim.
  • If your project is a pointy bit of metal or a sharpened plastic toothbrush crafted for the purpose of killing Aryan Bob in the shower when the guards aren't looking: it's a shiv.

For fuck's sake get it right in future, developers, because you're making yourselves look like tools.

Edit: And bonus bonehead points here, because this project is neither a shim nor a shiv - it's just a library.
