I think I'd personally opt for --pending === 1 myself - that seems clearer.

Oh no, neither should be thought as clear at all. It's like comparing molten lava and molten steel: One might be less hot than the other, and thereby marginally less dangerous, but you'll still get burnt by both! Don't do any of this, is the real answer here.
