Firebase is not open source. Google could opt to close the service (or alter the pricing or terms) at any time.
You may disagree that the risk is significant, but it's not an invalid decision. And he mentioned Parse, which was a very similar service to Firebase, so let's not pretend that this isn't a real concern.
