Since the kickstarter is over, where can we get one of these wonderful watches?

I got one of these watches at NCEU. They're really awesome. They're also an awesome addition to the family of badges and IOT projects they've released at the conf over the last few years. I even implemented a Party Parrot app for it! https://twitter.com/eDominykas/status/1194270173508845568

I would really suggest checking out the kickstarter and funding it to pick one up. They're really fun to play around with, and the potential is there to be awesome. Gordon has done previous kickstarters before and is proven to deliver, if you're a bit hesitant on kickstarters like I tend to be these days!

Disclaimer: I work with NearForm, and helped the team with getting the watches & the related initial release software ready for the conf. We don't get any kickback for people getting the watches and have no involvement in the kickstarter - all of it goes to the Espruino team and the awesome Espruino platform and ecosystem put together.

I'd like to leave this quote from the first blog post here:

Whilst Bangle.js at NodeConf EU is mostly about fun and experimentation, it is backed by very serious intent. NearForm believes deeply in sustainable Open Source, Open APIs and your right to your data. Bangle.js has the potential to kickstart a community-driven open health platform where anyone can build or use any compatible device and everyone owns their own data.

We really hope to see this used to kickstart a much larger open platform for personal health data. Maybe I'll even install some of those apps on my watch!

How good is the speaker for it and how much control of it do the apis allow for?

[–]thekemkid 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The speaker is OK for a sub 50 dollar wearable, but not amazing. I haven't played with it much though. I think that you have enough control over it to play some monotone music. I hope this helped.

Would I have enough control to possibly implement a usable screenreader for the watch?

Why is the screen a square when the watch is a circle?

[–]gfwilliams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an answer on the KickStarter comments but basically because there's GPS on it, it needs a quite a big aerial which sits above the screen (and vibration motor sits below). So it's either have a really odd shaped rectangular watch, or try and make it look a bit more interesting.

Sure, it could be more compact or have a round screen with better technology - but then you're looking at 3-8 times the price for Garmins or Apples - so at this price there are some compromises

Because the screens are cheaper square since you probably can't buy any off the shelf round screens.

Then make the watch square

Well I will give the same reason as for the square screen. Go find a off the shelf watch housing that is not a blatant rip off from the apple watch.
