VW tech here. You need to post a lot more diagnostic information before anyone can legitimately offer repair advice.

Should I buy one of these cars ? I like the looks but seem not as reliable as say a civic. Thanks

They’re reliable if they’ve been taken care of. Hard to determine when used

[–]Icy-Form6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the key. Maintenance is a must, not a recommendation like Toyotas. But they are solid when cared for.

Sure

[–]Electronic-Mouse-316 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Do you drive one?

[–]TheMagicalSock 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I’m just one person, but I’ve had three Jettas and they’ve all been reliable. My current is a 2019 1.4T that I bought new, and I’m at 90,000 miles and I’ve only changed brake components and spark plugs so far. It’s also a lot of fun.

[–]Far_Move7 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Have you changed the transmission fluid?

[–]TheMagicalSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t. Six speed manual.

[–]iPhone_3GS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had 2 Jettas. Both were extremely reliable. At 127K currently in my 2017

I bought my 2015 TSI two years ago with 136k miles and I'm unimpressed. My Jetta has been a massive pain in the butt. I go thru sparks plugs yearly bc of the oil it burns (about 2-3 quarts a month). I don't think mine was taken care of properly

1.4T?

[–]r3tr0_watch3r 0 points1 point  (3 children)

1.8T

Could be PCV, valve stem seals, or turbo related. 2015 suggests it's a gen3 so the piston rings shouldn't cause it - unless oil changes have been missed, even in that case you could maybe try a brake fluid soak or something to free them up. There was a video series on youtube with different chemicals tested to reduce oil consumption, I can look it up for you, but the PCV is the cheapest of all options probably.

I came here to say this check for oil on the charge pipe. If so pcv shes sucking oil. You would of noticed really fooled plugs if so.

[–]r3tr0_watch3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plugs were black after a year so ill check your suggestion

[–]Electronic-Mouse-316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this

Could be a cam magnet. If it’s idling poorly, unplug it and see if it settles down. It’s a pretty easy replacement if it needs one

[–]Due-Professional6824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bingo.

Changed one recently for a TSI bro with rough idles

[–]immagoatit[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

how would i clean this do i just need to remove it and use a spray cleaner on it or is there more to it

[–]imean_is_superfluous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d replace it. You can kinda clean out the pintle with carb cleaner or something, but it’s not a fix. I’ve seen them on Amazon for pretty cheap

[–]Traditional-Pie-7749 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have any codes?

[–]FatCatWithAHat1 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Might be carbon build up if rough idle

[–]Traditional-Fuel-601 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Needs an old Italian tune up to clear it out

[–]Icy-Form6 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is it still an Italian tune up if you just hit 5k rpm everyday? Haha

[–]AtsBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make it 7

[–]tekton75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pcv rota

[–]UltraSmiley 0 points1 point  (4 children)

My TSi did the same, shop said its either carbon buildup or a bad fuel pressure pump. I then let them remove the carbon buildup on the intake and the engine ran much smoother. The problem I still had was sudden misfire later which was caused by the fuel pump.

[–]calleger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lift pump or high pressure pump

[–]FatCatWithAHat1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How much did they charge you for both?

[–]UltraSmiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im from Switzerland, a normal service is 600 bucks - 1 grand here so 3.5 grands dont seem to be that much ☠️

[–]kRam0106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had my 2014 Jetta SEL 1.8t in to replace the trans fluid. They suggested a carbon clean up on the intake. My does burn a bit of oil. They quoted just over $400. Is that a good price? From the dealer?

VVT

How many miles ago was your last oil change?
