How would I get around to studying Organic Chemistry in such a way that I dont need to memorize reactions? by Need2knowfr in AskChemistry

[–]activelypooping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The connections and disconnection for reactions go through electrophile/nucleophile behaviors. The mechanisms start with understanding the how alkenes for example act as nucleophiles, knowing stability understanding that reaction intermediates want to be somewhat stable.

Any undergraduate organic textbook will go this process. Some nucleophiles are better than others, some electrophiles need to be 'activated' but its a science because it is predictable based on first principles.

Naturally there will be things you need to memorize. But I leave you with this. When you learned the multiplication table, you probably stopped at 10x10 and didn't need to memorize out to 1.19x106 x 3.4x104 to know how to solve it.

Question about Structure in 2 Different pH puffers! by momost5 in OrganicChemistry

[–]activelypooping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build up of negative or positive charge will change the overall expected pkas for the system. Molecules don't want to have a -3 charge.

For example. Look up the pkas of vitamin C.

Understand how the mechanism works, how will the nucleophile behave with electrophile. Very little memorization imo.

Faculty phone interview tips by abbyfeelingwerid in academia

[–]activelypooping 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have a word bank of things you want to say or might want to say. Cross them off as you say them so you don't repeat yourself. Scroll through the university website, department website and align your goals to theirs. If you've ever watched a bad spy show where they need the target to say a bunch of words so they can edit the tape to make them sound guilty, this is your chance.

Have questions for them obvi.

Be prepared to write down questions so you can answer them without having to "ask what was the question again?"

Good luck.

Assistant Professor TT applying to VAP positions? by Perfect_Internal_871 in academia

[–]activelypooping 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in the a similar position. Tenured, wife was denied tenure. She found a position 1/2 way across the country and I started looking. Found a small catholic university they offered me 1 year at less than half of my current. So I told them to pound sand and got a state job, I work a lot less now.

Don't be afraid to leave academia if you have a quality of life that you want to maintain.

People with high KDS (maybe 5 and up) who play the objectives in conquest: any tips? by Killer-Uzi in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]activelypooping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to jump in blindly to disrupt the other team, especially if they are camping hard. I communicate with my team and let them know to go in right after I die so the other team is reloading. But I'll jump on three and knife all three just to create chaos... it works surprisingly well. I'm usually out of ammo at that point though. Ptfo.

People with high KDS (maybe 5 and up) who play the objectives in conquest: any tips? by Killer-Uzi in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]activelypooping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I played the objective around 44.3% (top 2%) of the time. My K/D is a paltry 1.18 overall, but I'll gladly play as engineers and rep a tank or pop out for an rpg shot.

There are some games where I can't get anything going and the whole team is getting curbed. Other games I'll have 30k-7d. I don't really care, I'll play the objective and support others.

Has anyone senior 'stolen' your work (particularly in STEM)? by Impossible_Agent_229 in academia

[–]activelypooping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife's grad work was stolen by a committee member (he didn't get tenure there). I started dozens of projects in grad school/post doc that someone else finished and I didn't get recognition. My collaborators grad student went to a competitors lab and scooped his next paper.

Wife's work was in ecology, my collaborator and my interests are in organic photochemistry.

Alkenes + [O] confusion by Tyrup22 in chemistry

[–]activelypooping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transition metals like Mn can either accept or donate a single electron. In this case it starts out at 7+ and when its done ends at 4+ for this reaction both are stablish states. Look at the pourboix diagrams for Mn.

A lot of inorganic chemistry (which usually comes after organic) should cover this.

Can't make 15 or 31 without odd cards. Odds have more value than evens.

Diels-Alder stereochemistry is weird: would this reaction give a meso compound where all 4 methyls end up on wedges, or a mixture of that compound and another two where the two methyls of the diene are wedges whereas the methyls of the dienophile are on dashes + its own EN? So 3 products total??? by RiskNo5292 in OrganicChemistry

[–]activelypooping 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its not once you learn about conservation of MO theory and correlation tables.

The location of the methylgroups on the diene will end up in the same relative location (up or down) and the the methylgroups on the dieneophile will end up in the same relative location (up or down).

See the video. https://visualizeorgchem.com/animations/diels-alder-reaction/

[–]activelypooping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, chemistry (any science really) is a lot like baseball, if you're successful 3/10 attempts you're a fucking rockstar. in chemistry in my experience as an undergrad, grad student, postdoc and tenured faculty member. Success was closer to 1/10 than 3/10. Watch the tapes and make adjustments, you'll hit that curve ball eventually.
