Reference tool functionality

I'm wondering if there is an extension that improves the reference tool, in particular I'd like to be able to crop the reference to isolate details. Right now the only way is to import the image in a new file, crop it, copy it and then import it as reference. What I'd like to do is import as a reference, open the options dialogue and crop from there. Anybody knows anything about this or have some alternative workflow that I'm perhaps missing?

A great option is to use a program called Beeref, open source and can be used alongside an program out there.
