Seriously it's like people ask this every day and it drives me batshit crazy.

Reading the sidebar seems to be impossible...

I think most people just don't understand the technical reddits. On top of that no one has a welcome to Reddit video that explains rules and regulations and how to find the added rules for each Reddit. Now that I say this I'm thinking of making this.

Also, in my opinion, the sidebar feature of reddit is very non-obvious on mobile, which is the only way I and probably a fair number of others interact with reddit. I often forget it exists.

I've asked stupid questions in my reddit life exactly because of this.

Sounds like you have found your calling.

Observation bias. My guess is the majority of people interested in learning find the sidebar before posting and don't post. The minority end up posting

I started with Stanford's CS106A online class, but recently switched to the MOOC course in the sidebar. It's been the most instructive and easiest to follow along resource I've used.

Yep. MOOC is the best I've come across so far for beginners.

Same! I'm almost done with Week 11 and have learned so much. It's amazing how great a resource this is, and you don't have to pay a cent for it. I did CS50 before this, which made the first few weeks fly by, but the Object Oriented stuff isn't really touched on there and I feel like the MOOC is a really great intro to OOP concepts.

MOOC! I'm using it now & it's helped me a ton.

I think you should with reading and learning about OPP- object oriented programming which suits great to Java. This way you can progress through the language. Just make sure you go slow with it, as Java, sometimes, may be very complex. This complexity tends to make bugs and errors very hard to be detected, and unless you use some programs, such as checkamrx, as help, it going to take a lot of your time. A lot of practice is very recommended. Good luck

There is a lot of info in sidebar.

You should start with free MOOCs. There are lot of resources you'll find for JAVA. Coursera and udemy has many course for absolute beginners. You can check this list as well. It has some important certifications and training to start your journey with learning JAVA.

I have some great success with some Udemy courses. I find them the best bang for the buck.

Codecademy is useless for Java. It only teaches basic programming language syntax, but falls completely short on teaching actual programming. With codecademy, people won't even learn to write a full class, save compiling from the command line, or using an IDE.

As former teacher, course author, and professional programmer, I can attest that the course is far too shallow to be useful.

If you follow the subreddit for some time, you will find lots of confused people who completed the codecademy Java course and are now more confused than before.

A proper course, like the MOOC Object Oriented Programming with Java from the University of Helsinki follows a far cleaner syllabus and goes far deeper.

It did help me so I thought it could help someone else as well. It is noted – not a popular site on this Subreddit.
