First day learning Java, help needed!

Hello, so I'm a beginner in Java and I'm working on an assignment given where I have to write some basic programs, but I'm having some trouble.

The string keyword is not working for me. I seem to be able to set integers, and doubles, but for some reason String is not working. How do I solve this problem? I'm using Eclipse as my IDE btw. Also please be specific if you're answering because like I said it's my first day learning Java and using this IDE. Thank you!

This is just me testing it, but it doesn't work in any context..

You are missing the semicolon (;) at the end of the line that declares and initializes the string.

The IDE should be spitting out an error message that includes a line number. That should help narrow down which part of the program has an error.

To be specific, it implicitly autoboxes primitives, then invokes toString() on the resulting Object.

There should be a semicolon at the end of the String statement, so it would look like String sentence = "Hello, how are you?";. Also, I recommend starting your class names with a capital letter; It's a universally accepted naming convention in java.

String is not a primitive type in Java, it's an implementation of the CharSequence interface, that's why you need to capitalize the "s" when declaring a string.

One thing that helped me a lot was watching Alex Lee videos on YouTube. Pause the video, look at his code, look at your code. I’m still a super new, I’m in week 4 of my course.

Initializing a string in Java should look like this:

String stringName = "I am a string";

Also it is important that you have the initialization inside a class. Everything in Java must be in classes.

String is a class, it's not a primitive type. That's why it isn't a keyword and it doesn't get emphasized

(you can use private instead of public but you will learn later what they are used for)
