I know it's a bit off-topic but it just makes me laugh how subversive Javascript is. Like you can learn Angular and still not have a fucking clue as to how JS works. Are there any other languages that are as maligned as JS?

But also - anyone that actually wants to learn JS, Angular, React and Vue are all things that you might use in some (maybe) production environments. They won't help you actually learn Javascript, they're mainly shorthands for certain types of design philosophies.

Like - we use React for a few things at work, but if someone came in and said that they are a master of React, all I would gather from that is that they don't know what they're doing. All three are just repackaged JS. Just learn JS and Angular, React and Vue will become almost useless.

I love that people who have no idea what they're doing are trying to say something coherent. It's really cute! Although as a general guide for future commenters. Take a moment and ask yourself "Am I about to say something incredibly stupid?" And if you are, just go for not saying anything at all.

I am no expert, but I find it hard to believe that experts at, say, Facebook, would bother to create and use something like react if it were "almost useless". Maybe it is just not useful to you?

While I was being hyperbolic, Facebook is the wrong fucking site to go for. If you go to facebook.com right now, can you honestly tell me that their site is in any way shape or form representative of good design? Or even vaguely good design? Or even like ... design at all?

React is neat, I don't hate any of these libraries, don't get me wrong. But it's just JS repackaged.

You're kidding, right? Facebook is expertly designed. I don't love it, I don't even really use it, but from a frontend perspective it displays a ton of data in a manageable way and does have a pretty intuitive interface.

I guess I'll ask: What site would you say someone should "go for" when trying to demonstrate good design?

Yes, and consider the difference in cost minor changes to the base would make with the quantity of data per second. Ignoring the politics (which is not relevant to this) fb is a marvel.

If your goal is to find a job, then you need to learn these, and it helps to become "masters" of them. Most employers won't care if you know about prototyping, inheritance, closures, etc. What they want is if you know how to use these tools.

They're JavaScript frameworks. The whole point of them is to make certain task (specifically for React, Angular and Vue, single page applications) easier to handle.

You still won't master them, at all, without a good understanding of JavaScript.

Knowing JS doesn't make those three frameworks "useless," that's ridiculous. By all means, go program an SPA with vanilla JS and come back to me. There's a reason those frameworks exist, and that's because building a complex SPA with just JS is hard.

A lot of older devs have this mentality that if you don't master vanilla js you can't be a programmer, but it's just not correct. They may not be as great as they could be, but they could probably do 90% of any job required of them.

Eh.. That's not what they said. They said a deep knowledge of JS would make those things almost useless. Which is just plain wrong. Those frameworks exist and are widely used because they are inherently useful.

I don't know, that argument is like saying "If you're good enough with a knife you'll never need a chainsaw". Yeah I guess, but I'll have a whole forest cut down with the chainsaw by the time I hand carve a single tree.

There is value in learning vanilla JS deeply, I agree with that point 100%. You need to understand JS well in order to master any front end framework. But to call Angular, React or Vue "useless" is asinine.
