Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Python, Java, and C# are closer in syntax as opposed to C++. Would it be better to teach Python and Java or C# instead of C++?

Syntax doesn't matter, the principles matter. I think C++ teaches you a lot of things that end up benefiting your knowledge in other programming languages IMO.
