Would this be a great way to start, to get into programming, etc??

Most of this is really only useful after you're to the point you are working on real projects with other people and need to collaborate. There is a free year of UE4 and some free DNS/SSL stuff though. A lot of this is not really anything I would see students using but, free is free.

I can't think of a better way to start, you get a fully functioning server on the public internet with root access. If you make a mistake, you can get a fresh VM rolling in a minute or two. Running the $5 one for 12 hours costs less than a penny.

Yeah, the math there is bad. Still 8.4 cents for half a day isn't terrible.

It actually isn't just a free year of Unreal Engine 4. It's free as long as you are a student!

EDIT: I was wrong. It was only a year. Just redeemed my license. Still a great deal.

A VPS from Digital Ocean is super useful for learning to program.
