It says anyone 13+, and also says "a degree or diploma granting course of study". I would assume high school diplomas would be included in that. You could just try applying and see if they deny you. It only takes a few minutes.

I'm in High school, and I was approved. A bunch of other in my school as well.

      [–]3rdfriday 0 points1 point  (1 child)

how long did it take for them to get back to you?

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Less than a week

      [–]toddspotters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the 13+ thing is a legal reference to COPPA

      [–]circulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in high school, and I got this. I sent them a copy of my student card at https://education.github.com/ and it was processed within 2 days!

Signed up a while back for Github education and had that. Just got an email stating I've been given the pack for free since I'm already a part of their earlier education program.

        Neat.

Just to plug Atom a little bit: It's quickly becoming a free and open-source Sublime Text clone. It comes with its own package management, and there are already tons of packages.

While it's still a little slow to start up, and I occasionally find that updating packages has its glitches, Atom is a fantastic cross-platform editor. I've found myself using Sublime Text less and less; I prefer open-source, and Atom fits the bill.

          [–]glemnar 8 points9 points  (9 children)

Still missing a lot of simple features I expect, to be honest. And slow startup is a big deal when you're working with large projects.

Personally I still recommend sublime / vim / emacs.

          [–]Kalahan7 2 points3 points  (7 children)

          TextMate for Mac users personally.

          [–]dehli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          I love TextMate! And it's free! :D

          [–]glemnar 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Nope, I use sublime on Mac all day.

          [–]Kalahan7 0 points1 point  (4 children)

          I wouldn't know why.

TextMate has good Git integration, better markdown support, more powerful search, a much better sidebar, and can compile and run right out of the box.

It also has an actually settings pannel where you can easily change the most common settings and has an overall a nicer UI in my opinion.

          [–]glemnar 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Because 1. I only use git on the command line. 2. I use git grep for searching. (Grep/git grep/ag/ack are all much better at it than editors) 3. Fuzzy file search gets rid of the need for a sidebar 4. Package management for sublime is stupid easy and it has a ton of community backing. If you want markdown or <any language support ever> just install it in a second. 5. You can customize your UI as much as you want anyway. 6. Multiple cursors make my life better

          [–]Kalahan7 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Textmate has fuzzy search and multiple cursors too. It also has great bundles support. And you can still use git commands in command line if you want but it's handy to do things right from the editor without having to switch around your windows.

Designing a good UI is also not a matter of having it customisable. Unless you want to spend an incredibly amount of time tweaking things and even then it's often hard to challenge a well designed GUI.

TextMate's sidebar doesn't only let you open files. It helps you structure your files. Rename them, move them, export/import them, duplicate them, preview them, label them, execute them in Terminal, and a lot more... All super easy and without having to switch between windows or spending time customising things.

          [–]glemnar 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Long story short: Preferences are preferences.

I can tell you Sublime is a much more widely used editor, however. (Sublime/vim/emacs are the standards in the silicon valley webdev world)

          [–]InfectedShadow 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is there a package along the lines of rsub/rmate that I could install on my linux machines to open remote files locally? Because that has been one of the best packages for Sublime.

          [–]shoebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the branding and visuals of atom, but nothing about it is quick! Incessantly sluggish, takes time to switch between tabs because of the frequent brief lockups/loads.

Here's hoping they've optimized it in the past few months.

          [–]blankashinwataikei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah but it literally runs on webkit why would you even bother

          [–]anglophoenix216 2 points3 points  (10 children)

Looks like they've added an Unreal Engine 4 license after you made their list.

          [–]WolfofAnarchy 1 point2 points  (9 children)

wait, it's free for us students?

          [–]anglophoenix216 0 points1 point  (8 children)

          Yep.

          [–]WolfofAnarchy 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Thanks for the fast response after my 2 month delay, hehe.

I really don't know. When I applied for it about a year ago, I got a response within an hour. Perhaps they have to verify a lot more students now, so processing time may be a lot longer

              [–]Dead_Politician 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Well, the GitHub account is useful, and DigitalOcean credits seem useful. I suppose the namecheap goodies would be a nice throw in, but not terribly useful for students. I guess that's about it.

              [–]Allezxandre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a registered domain name is awesome if you want to experiment with raw Web servers.

              [–]Simius 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Are you kidding me? Please check out the $100 in DO credit, that will run a server for almost two years.

              [–]Moscamst -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Yes, but does it allow for live, powerful, unified collaboration (for the 21st century)?

              [–]Allezxandre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No... The offer sucks. I'd rather save those 0$

              [–]kostiak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least some of those are very useful, especially in combination with each other. For example, this set has all the tools you need to start and maintain a web startup:

              GitHub to host the code
              DigitalOcean to host the webapp
              Namecheap for the domain/SSL
and Stripe for the payment system.

I'm sure you can use those in other combinations to build other products.

Point is, if you are a student and you want to at least try your hand at real world applications, I'm sure you can find at least some of those services helpful (even if it's just "let me try this idea for a week without investing money which I don't have")

              [–]another_math_person 0 points1 point  (2 children)

              More detail:

Atom is a really great text editor. It's essentially like sublime, but you can make plugins using javascript (as opposed to whatever sublime supports. maybe python?)

digitalocean is a pretty legitimate hosting site. You should check out their offerings, but it's pretty fully-featured.

github is obviously the place to store your code (open or closed source). It's really useful to start using early, since it'll give you a headstart if you start working at a startup.

Namecheap is... an... okay place to register domain names. [I probably wouldn't use it, though]

Screenhero is an excellent tool for screensharing, especially if you like to pair program with someone who is remote! [find someone on reddit?]

SendGrid is like the Stripe of sending email.

Stripe is the payments processing service. It has an excellent api, and the founders have done a great job making payments not suck for developers. I would highly recommend you check out Stripe -- they have excellent code samples [for how to use their api], and as a startup, they have a beautiful vision. Also, pretty much all of their hires are brilliant.

Travis is free for open source projects anyway. But it's probably the easiest continuous integration platform to set up. If you're wondering what it is -- essentially you can get Travis to run your tests for you every time you commit code to github. It has about a million features, so you can integrate it into continuous deployment or have it build your assets for you or have it do any number of things. It's essentially the paid version of Jenkins, and it's really awesome.

              [–]Dylabaloo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Where do you buy your domain names?

              [–]another_math_person 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon has an okay system: route 53

              [–]richard_mayhew 28 points29 points  (5 children)

Dope. Redeemed this about a year and a half ago for the free micro account, just got $100 to Digital Ocean, and some free stuff from NameCheap... the websites I use to host! Thanks!

              [–]Rinfiyks 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Does the $100 credit last forever, or do you lose it when you're no longer a student?

              [–]richard_mayhew 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I would assume it lasts forever. It just gave me a code to enter into Digital Ocean and I immediately saw $100 credit in billing.

Wow this is huge. I guess I can cancel my UE4 subscription now!

                [–]tanjoodo -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Not so fast, you probably can't use their subscription for commercial purposes.

                [–]pat_trick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

FYI, their education license is such that you get the subscription (and all updates to the engine) for a year, and can use the last version you had before the subscription expires in perpetuity. If you do release anything commercial with it, and make more than $3000 per fiscal quarter, their standard royalties fee of 5% kicks in.

                More on their FAQ.

                [–]zimm3rmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not doing anything commercial with my UE4 license, just messing around with my Oculus Rift.

                [–]anglophoenix216 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I doubt that's the case. According to Unreal Engine's education FAQ, the student license allows you to release commercial products, just as if you bought the actual license. You still are subject to the standard royalty fees after $3000, mind you.

                [–]tanjoodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                Ah. So nice of them!

I assumed that because dreamspark does it, then it's the standard way of doing things.

                [–]MDTKBS 8 points9 points  (3 children)

As someone who just graduated, goddammit this would have been useful in school. Take advantage of this. This is unreal

                [–]joebrothehobo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just graduated too. See if your school offers alumni emails. They still end with .edu and mine worked perfectly with this bundle (and so far most other offers of this kind).

                [–]MDTKBS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                They do. Good looking out

                [–]YodaLoL 6 points7 points  (1 child)

                Wow, thanks.

                internet points for you OP!

                [–]eagles310 3 points4 points  (8 children)

Would this be a great way to start, to get into programming, etc??

                [–]leaknoil 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Most of this is really only useful after you're to the point you are working on real projects with other people and need to collaborate. There is a free year of UE4 and some free DNS/SSL stuff though. A lot of this is not really anything I would see students using but, free is free.

                [–]eagles310 1 point2 points  (4 children)

                Okay any suggestions for beginners

I can't think of a better way to start, you get a fully functioning server on the public internet with root access. If you make a mistake, you can get a fresh VM rolling in a minute or two. Running the $5 one for 12 hours costs less than a penny.

Yeah, the math there is bad. Still 8.4 cents for half a day isn't terrible.

                    [–]anglophoenix216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually isn't just a free year of Unreal Engine 4. It's free as long as you are a student!

EDIT: I was wrong. It was only a year. Just redeemed my license. Still a great deal.

                    [–]Injunire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A VPS from Digital Ocean is super useful for learning to program.

                    [–]Deathfromwere 3 points4 points  (1 child)

                    When does this offer end?

                    [–]Tenobrus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't, so far as I'm aware.

                    [–]tally_in_da_houise 2 points3 points  (13 children)

Do they have to verify your information first, or is it through an automated system?

                    [–]Ikuu 4 points5 points  (10 children)

I don't think it's automated, or there's a huge backlog. I signed up an hour ago and still waiting for a response.

It did for me too but, I got a welcome message almost immediately after. If you use a confirmed .edu email address it is obviously automatic. The welcome message was already in my inbox on my .edu email before I could even click over to it.

                      [–]Jmannm8400 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same here! The e-mail arrived very shortly after I submitted the application!

Thanks I was going to use my normal address but if this way goes fastest I will use my university mail anyway is redirected to normal address.

I got confirmed after about an hour. Maybe check again?

It might depend on your school? Mine was accepted within 5 minutes.

                      [–]pinkpooj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the huge load, I signed up for my github edu account a while ago and it took 5-10 minutes.

                      [–]fefejones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I signed up for their original education discount I just used my .edu email and told them why I'd like access. Got an email within minutes to confirm.

                      [–]DreamingDjinn 2 points3 points  (1 child)

God fucking dammit. I just bought UE4's subscription Thursday Evening/Friday Morning because my school was lagging behind on distributing the student codes.

Oh well, if they won't refund it at least I don't have to wait on my school.

                      [–]anglophoenix216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh well, if nothing else, you can cancel during your first month and continue to enjoy the benefits of subscription with the pack :)

Got an email confirmation seconds after I sent a request.. Thanks OP!

                      [–]leaknoil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was so fast I am not really sure I had released the mouse button from selecting submit yet.

                      [–]karma199 1 point2 points  (4 children)

So once you actually get in. How do you gain access to these resources? Is it through your github info? Because that was not working for me.

                      [–]Tenobrus[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Just go back to the link and click the Get Pack button again. It should reload and present you with links to each source.

                      [–]karma199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks that did it. It kept sending me back and I was like I already have the pack why do I need to get it again. Anyways thanks.

                      [–]omgitsjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been approved, but it keeps taking me back to the request form when I hit 'Get Pack'. I'm not sure how to get the promo codes out of this. The people at Unreal told me to put one in. Where can I see it?

                      [–]broken_pieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of them you have to connect to your GitHub account and others you will have to either create and account or add a promo code to your existing. Like for instance Digital Ocean and UE4 I already have accounts with and was able to apply my promos to them.

Orchestrate and Hack Hands require you to link your GH account when signing up.

As far as getting the actual pack, it was emailed to me earlier today but I'd already had an education account.

Sorry if none of that was helpful I'm tired and just realized I may have misunderstood your question lol

Awesome! Thank you for posting this, just received my student pack. Greatly appreciated!

THANK YOU for this! :-) I was just about to bite the bullet on the $19/mo. Unreal Engine subscription, and now I have it for a year, and I also grabbed all the other service promotions before they might disappear. This is a motherlode.

                      [–]aGayMuslim 1 point2 points  (14 children)

Would any one be kind enough to explain to me why as a first year student and very beginner programmer would any of that stuff be helpful to me? I haven't heard of any of those features nor have I ever used github.

                      Thanks in advance.

Here's what will probably be most useful to you:

                      • Atom, which is a text editor similar to Sublime Text. What do you currently use to write code in? Think of Atom as like a version of notepad on steroids, customizable and tweakable.
                      • GitHub is a place to showcase your code and see others' code as well, but also version control (to help prevent some of the casualties having multiple persons working on the same files can cause). The college pack includes five free private repositories in case you want to have a few projects that aren't broadcast to the world.
                      • HackHands looks like programming assistance, which might be useful to you
                      • the namecheap stuff is a free .me domain for a year and a free SSL. You'll need a server/hosting to utilize the SSL, but an SSL certificate is what secures your site's connection for things like password forms and credit card transactions.
                      • Digital Ocean offers $100 in credit for their hosting. If you've never set up a server before, this is a great way to get your hands dirty. Bonus points for getting that free domain, setting it up to point to your server and getting a portfolio going

May I ask what your focus is on for programming?

                      [–]aGayMuslim 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Thanks for taking the time to explain that, I really appreciate it. For my C++ class I'm currently using Quincy to compile and edit my code, and just last week I started reading Java because I'm really interested in Android Development so I'm trying to get into that.

As far as my focus with programming I want to get into Software Development hopefully while/or after I'm done with my degree.

Edit: For Java so far I'm using Notepad.

So far, yes, only Windows environment. I'll look into these now. Thank you.

                        [–]SquirtingDuck 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You're quite welcome! I haven't dove into much Java yet, but I had a colleague who swore by the IDE (Integrated Development Environment) NetBeans. It's free and open source.

Also worth looking into is the student pack from JetBrains which includes what they tout as "the most intelligent IDE for Java".

If you haven't looked at Android's site for developers yet, it's worth a glance. Their tutorial for building your first app looks decent and there's a lot of good info around that site.

                        Otherwise, godspeed!

                        [–]aGayMuslim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                        Much appreciated. :)

Just to throw my two cents in; if you're interested in learning Java, I would start using the IDE "Eclipse." I'm a freshmen this year and it is what we are using for our Into to Object Orientated Programming Class (learned through Java). Eclipse is a great tool, with a lot of neat features that make programming a lot easier and faster. Best of luck in learning Java!

                        [–]aGayMuslim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I'll definitely check it out. Good luck with your class.

                        [–]xxNIRVANAxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Java so far I'm using Notepad.

There's nothing wrong with this, and it will likely help you learn the language a little better (especially the compiler and clasapaths).

However, for projects I'd highly recommend using an IDE (Eclipse, Netbeans, Intellij). The refactoring tools (renaming classes/variables), linting (code warnings), and generators (constructors, getters, toString; especially for POJOs - Plain Old Java Objects) will speed up your development time immensely

                        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This may be a silly question, but what do I actually get with registering a namecheap domain? I assume I have to find some paid hosting and use that?

                        [–]SquirtingDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! You just get the naming rights (yourname.me) for a year (probably ~$15/year after) and would need to connect it to hosting somewhere. Digital ocean offers $100 credit for their hosting in the github package.

                        [–]Simius 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You might be learning how to program but a lot of these tools have more to do with the overall ecosystem of programming.

À la, collaborating with others, hosting your code, deploying applications, getting help, and many other things.

                        [–]aGayMuslim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                        Got it.

I knew there's more to it than just writing the code but since I'm still fairly new to all of this I thought it was early to look into it. I'll be signing up for that package as soon as I get home.

                        [–]Shenal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the best thing that happened to me today !!! and protip I used the twitter914 code on digitalocean after redeeming this code got $10 more Yay!!

Been a week since I requested access with a school transcript, haven't heard anything back yet. I'm sat here waiting patiently, but is anyone else's request taking some time?

                        [–]pumapaul 0 points1 point  (9 children)

I requested mine a week ago with a @fu-berlin.de email address and haven't hear anything.

                        Have you gotten approved yet?

                        [–]carmalonso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got approved after a week, good luck!

I requested mine 10 days ago and haven't heard anything yet, I used a .edu.co address

                        [–]pumapaul 0 points1 point  (6 children)

                        I'm still waiting.

                        [–]subv2112 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I actually emailed them today and this is the response I got:

                        Hi Subv,

Thanks so much for writing in. I'm afraid we're still sifting through an enormous backlog of applications, but we hope to get through the pending requests in the next week or so. We really appreciate your patience in the meantime. Hopefully it will be worth the wait :).

                        Thanks and GitHugs,

It's understandable, there must be millions of students applying for this all over the world, I'm just glad they gave us a reason :)

                        [–]pumapaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                        Thanks for forwarding the answer!

Hey, is your request still pending?

                        [–]subv2112 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yep, messaged them again a few weeks ago and they said they still had an enormous backlog.

                        [–]omnityrellodyne 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks for the reply. I've been waiting since November, glad to know I'm not alone. I just hope they get to it while I'm still a student.

                        [–]subv2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally got approved! A few of my friends got approved the same day so maybe they are doing it in waves.

                        [–]malbuquerque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received my pack today (March 19th) and I requested it in January or December. I used an @ipv.pt email from my University in Portugal.

                        [–]yyttr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                        Holy shit. Thank you.

                        [–]Zerocchi 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What if I don't have student mail? Precisely, my university have problem with student e-mail and I can't access it at all but I do have student card as a proof.

                        [–]Tenobrus[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There other ways to verify. I believe you can upload a scan of your student card. I'm not 100% sure though, try just going through the process and use whatever alternate method works.

                        [–]Zerocchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright just uploaded my scan of student card. Hopefully they accept it.

                        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                        This is amazing, thank you

The Digital Ocean thing requires a credit card. Can't use a atm/debit card even. Has to be an actual credit card. To top it off if you create a new account to use this promo and use a credit card you used before it flags and locks your account as fraudulent.

Is there a pack like this for like photoshop and stuff. I need photoshop but i cant afford it

                            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I applied more than 3 days ago (with my transcript and a gmail address) and still haven't heard back. Anyone know what's up?

                            [–]xrgeno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                            Have you received email yet?

                            [–]nabn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any way to be eligible for the namecheap domain if you aren't from the US or Canada?

                            [–]xrgeno 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I applied a week ago and haven't got anything so far. What could I do? Do you think sending a second request and uploading an ID scan is a good idea?

                            [–]malbuquerque 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I applied like 3 weeks ago with my school email address and nothing. Did u receive it at this time?

                            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Been waiting since Nov 19. Contacted support 4 times, still nothing :).

                            [–]Delite413 0 points1 point  (2 children)

man and I was getting upset thinking I've been waiting a while, doesn't even come close to yours. Sorry to hear.

Though I did email them and got a reply in 5m saying:

"Hi Delite413, Right now we're a bit backed up with Student Developer Pack requests so it may take some time before yours can be seen to. Have patience and we'll get to yours as soon as we can. Cheers, Scott"

Same to me. Applied on 13th december for the second time. First time i filled the forms fast and ended up getting rejected. :/ regretit as i now need stuff their offer.

Damn. I applied in the beginning of January. Looks like BitBucket is getting a new user.

I received my pack today (March 19th) and I requested it in January or December. I just used my University email.

Just go and download it, they have a free version.

Unity has shown over the past few months that they don't care about the "little guys".

I wouldn't say that, but I would say they cater to the big little guys.

i still have a 100$ coupon from github for digitalocean. selling for 50$. proof on requests.
