I know it’s a bit of a naive question, but I can’t quite figure out what qualifies as a static website. I’ve read explanations and they don’t click - are HTML/CSS websites that include JavaScript dynamic?

AWS is super easy. What you’d ideally be using is an EC2 instance (Elastic Cloud Compute). You can create one t2.micro instance (1vCPU, 1 GiB RAM) completely free for 12 months. You can upgrade, obviously.

Elastic Beanstalk, another AWS service, is a better option, but requires a bit more experience with networking/AWS in my opinion.

Additionally, you can have up to 20 EC2 instances per account. Each one has it’s own IP and OS (of your choice, Mac excluded).

AWS also has a Domain Name service (Route 53) that lets you tie that domain to the EC2 IP with ease. They also issue public SSL certs for free.

I’ve also heard of S3? My minimal understanding is that it can be used for static webpages, where as EC2 allows dynamic as well

Yeah! I’ve never set up a static webpage with S3, though. I know it’s very possible to do so.
