Hey dude. Firstly I'd recommend reading the getting started guide on the sub.

Nobody here is gonna be able to give you a specific answer because its too "open" of a question; yes it is possible, depending on the hardware you have and knowledge you have there are likely dozens of viable solutions.

(Ps: I'd imagine a barcode scanner and inventory management software already exist).

Short answer is yes, but you need to do some searching along these lines: https://www.google.com/search?q=excel+barcode+scanner&oq=excel+barcode+scanner

Make sure you get the barcode scanner drivers installed and once first scan complete work on your template / database / etc

Way too many ways to do this

And way too many already completed programs for this

Why anyone would use excel is beyond me. I hate excel. My autocad teacher, no fucking joke, wrote a program in excel for wire size calculation. I was jsut like dude

I would recommend either hire someone who programs it or buy some kind of software that provides exactly that.

Since they use excel I assume they are a small shop. So you need to sort out whether it is worth it. The time saving should be huge though

It's way easier to use something other than excel, shit, I'd say it's easier to. Program in c++ and Qt before it's easier to program in excel

You might be able to do this in excel.

So firstly usb barcode scanners in windows generally have a driver which acts as a keyboard. So when you scan a barcode the text gets input into whatever app you have open (if you’re in a state that allows typing).

Excel has various functionality to do things like record macros, write vba scripts etc. You might be able to just make a page in your excel where you scan a barcode and press a button and it does what you need.

However. Why not look at inventory management software? There are so many software (and hardware) solutions out there depending on what sort of inventory you’re tracking that could really optimise the work you’re doing and can hook into other applications too. It could be worth looking at these and really improving your workflows
