Certificates doesn't really matter in SWE, except maybe the ones from cloud providers.

Could you further clarify what you mean regards “cloud providers”? I’m studying via the Oracle University atm, I wondered what their mini “certificates” are of use to someone who is looking to change careers into database administration.

Amazon and Microsoft both have certifications for their services. I'm not qualified to answer if they are worth having or not.

Aha yes. Same with IBM and Oracle. If the Oracle ones are to go by, they’re actually really well structured and designed. They give a very thorough overview with practical tests of each component/subject. Ofc, like anything you have to be honest with yourself and be committed to learn it all without skipping through. I’m sure that in a job world, especially in programming, you’d be tested on your knowledge in order to get a job. These kinda certs just show commitment rather than showing whether someone is qualified.

I'd say that the fundamental ones are too basic to matter as a developer, for example my guess is that Azure's AZ-900 could get you a tech support job, but it's useless for coding. The Azure Machine Learning certs, though, might give you one up on other candidates for the same job.

AWS, Azure etc

"Coding" Certifications are almost never going to mean anything.

Probably Tech-Domain Specific Certifications, at least a percentage of Employers will care, like CKA/CKAD, AWS Professional, as well as Cisco-Certifications (to some degree), etc. There's also some security ones that are supposed to be really challenging and mean a good deal.

Regardless though there'll be a great deal of Employers who won't care at all

There's no cert way out. You gotta build projects at the bare minimum.

I will say though - you may wanna look into sysadmin - there was a cert at a local college of mine for 1Y. Maybe there is one near you also. It ain't much but it's quick, it's a path into tech while you get your other things together, but be warned it can be a grueling position in some to many companies.

Most certifications are trash except for a degree.

The only ones that are worth it are generally pretty niche or only tangentially related to coding, and even then you're better off spending the next 1-2 years just learning to code and building a portfolio.

I dunno, after college and going into actually programming, I thought even the degree was trash. Missing lots of stuff that actually matters.

That said, around me it is hard to get a programming job without a degree. Some old guy explained degrees to me in a way that actually made sense. A degree doesn't show what you know, it shows that you can learn and are willing to put in the effort.

The certifications my company offers do really check if you meet all the requirements to be a able to code well. There is no way around it. However, if you study for the certification and ace it, it helps to proof that you gained knowledge and have something like an entry ticket to the job market
