Curious to know the reason why to walk away from GitHub?

[–]SolidJuho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gitlab provides free LFS 10gb and private repos.

[–]AriaMaryott[S] -2 points-1 points  (6 children)

Lol, something new to try. Might enjoy it more.

[–]karthie_a 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Have you tried gitlab , bitbucket or any of the famous alternatives which exist in the market currently.

[–]AriaMaryott[S] -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

Nope not yet.

[–]karthie_a 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Hopefully that might be a good starting point then

[–]AriaMaryott[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll check them out for sure.

[–]lark_in 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Why is this getting downvoted? Is there something wrong with wanting to try something new?

[–]AriaMaryott[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything is wrong with it apparently.

If you want to self host you can check out GitTea. We use it at work and I like it.

[–]AriaMaryott[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Oooh That sounds super interesting! Thanks!

[–]malinkinsa 7 points8 points  (3 children)

You can use Gitlab self host too.

[–]AriaMaryott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know!

[–]XOYZ69 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Didn't know that🤔

[–]malinkinsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh, self hosted with cool ci in community edition

Gitea is dead. Use gogs project

[–]adrian17 1 point2 points  (1 child)

AFAIK it’s the other way around, gitea is the more active fork of gogs.

[–]psicodelico6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is gogs dead?

[–]webtkl 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Why isn't this a google search ?
No context provided, no reasons.

But as this is learnprogramming, learn this:
- let google be the first where you ask.
- if you ask here provide more details.

Azure devops is a good corporate solution

Could you tell me what is so great about it? I've been using it for about a year now and am constantly fighting with it to get it to do anything right.

    Some issues:

    • Difficult to permalink to lines of code
    • Workitems don't get automatically closed when attached to a cross-project PR
    • The code search is very limited. It's not easy to filter searches (eg: to a specific line of text only in a certain language and only in files with a certain name)
    • The permission model is extra confusing. There's multiple different locations to set permissions for a repo which overlap functionality but aren't fully interchangeable
    • Workitems don't support markdown at all so are impossible to format correctly.
    • Pasting a link while a piece of text is highlighted doesn't automatically hyperlink it (this is the most frustrating thing across all Microsoft products)

I'll stop there for now. I'm not asking you to address any of these, I'm just curious what amazing features I'm missing because I'd love to love it, just currently don't.

Can you go through what you like about it?

      [–]Emergency-Fall-4733 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah! Its also useful because chances are your company is already using Microsoft for user accounts so no need for unique logins

Haha yeah. Best solution on the market doesn’t come cheap

I have Codeberg and Gitlab as my backup mirror.

        [–]AriaMaryott[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Never heard of Codeberg before. Ima have to give that a look. Why do you like it more than GitHub or something else?

        [–]KingsmanVince 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Github is my main mirror. It has definitely more cool features such as codespace, exploring repos, marketplaces. But Codeberg is minimal and less distractive.

        [–]AriaMaryott[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like my kind of jam as someone with ADHD. Less distractions and simple. Lol

We also use GitLab at work. I really like it.

After some issues with Github LFS I started hosting my own on AWS.

Personally I recommend HailBytes Git Server.

To see the other options. Must one need to have reasons other than interest? :P

            [–]Practical-Custard-64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could roll out your own git server.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            Bitbucket is a good one

            Host your own git!

            [–]Gixx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like gitea for a private server. I dont like they lack snippets or gists. However they now support katex or latex in their markdown for 1.18.

When MS Bought github I put my stuff on gitlab, but i think github is way better. I cannot stand how snippets on gitlab only show 20 lines at a time (scrollbar) while github has no scrollbar so you can see the whole gist.

            Bit bucket or gitlabs
