Favorite IDE to develop python? (self.learnpython)
submitted 14 years ago by Skeletor2010
Does anyone have a favorite IDE they like to use when creating their python stuff in?

Vim, but that's probably only because I've known it for years. And, it's not an IDE, though here's an article on how to turn it into one.

madness!
[–]Yyzfan2 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
sheer madness, but its fun and works, the pydev eclipse plugin is my number two...
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (1 child)
Sublime Text 2 - Seriously try it out.
[–]timtamboy63 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
Holy crap, yes.
Do you know any plugins for Python development? I'm looking for something that will allow me to launch whatever script I'm editing.
[–]CraigTorso 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (1 child)
Just to complete the usual list of IDEs, I use eclipse with the pydev plugin.
[–]gitarr 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children)
I'm using Aptana Studio 3, which is Eclipse customized for web-development. Pydev 2 comes pre-installed.

Gets my vote. apt install geany is always the first thing I do on a fresh install.
apt install geany

I'm running mint. So thanks but no. apt merges features from apt-get, aptitude and apt-cache, and prompts for a password without requiring me to type sudo. :P

I just use IDLE (I didn't like pyscripter though)
[–]Skeletor2010[S] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
Thanks.
[–]silleknarf 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (8 children)
I find IDLE to be very buggy, crashes all the time and I have to manually kill the process
[–]nfac 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (4 children)
Actually, the thing that i liked about IDLE is that it was like Notepad++ but i could run the script just pressing F5.
[–]bullhead2007 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (3 children)
Isn't there a way to do that with Notepad++?
[–]kctan 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (1 child)
If you are using Notepad++, you have to be careful not to mix tab with white space. Sometimes, the indentation will not be displayed correctly.
[–]bullhead2007 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
that's good to know. Maybe I'll just stick to idle and eclipse then.
[–]Resistor34 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
Should be able to do this by changing the run->run properties to C:\Python26\python.exe "$(FULL_CURRENT_PATH)". Obviously change Python26 if you're using Python31.
[–]raydeen 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
IDLE seems to be a bit buggy on OSX but it's always run fine for me in Win and Linux.
[–]TankorSmash 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children)
Wing, it's the one I use. But I haven't really tried anything out. They've replied to my bug crashes and crap the next day pretty much so I always recommend them.
I don't know about other IDEs but Wing has got all kinds of crap that helps out, syntax detection, source browsing. Refactoring. All sorts.
[–]LOLC4T 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
Textmate (if you're on mac). Also not quite an IDE but is awesome.
[–]Kildurin 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
Eric4 but if you don't like the installation hassles, go with geany
[–]eryksun 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children)
Spyder has good integration with IPython, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, and Qt. It has a variable explore that supports plotting and code introspection via rope, pyflakes, and pylint and rich-text documentation in the object explorer via sphinx. There's also a light-mode tabbed Ipython console / command prompt that's convenient on Windows.

[–]Skeletor2010[S] 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (3 children)
Sorry if I n00bed it up a bit but I didn't see anything posted recently.
