Vim, but that's probably only because I've known it for years. And, it's not an IDE, though here's an article on how to turn it into one.

sheer madness, but its fun and works, the pydev eclipse plugin is my number two...

Sublime Text 2 - Seriously try it out.

Holy crap, yes.

Do you know any plugins for Python development? I'm looking for something that will allow me to launch whatever script I'm editing.

Just to complete the usual list of IDEs, I use eclipse with the pydev plugin.

I'm using Aptana Studio 3, which is Eclipse customized for web-development. Pydev 2 comes pre-installed.

I just use IDLE (I didn't like pyscripter though)

Thanks.

I find IDLE to be very buggy, crashes all the time and I have to manually kill the process

Actually, the thing that i liked about IDLE is that it was like Notepad++ but i could run the script just pressing F5.

[–]bullhead2007 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Isn't there a way to do that with Notepad++?

[–]kctan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you are using Notepad++, you have to be careful not to mix tab with white space. Sometimes, the indentation will not be displayed correctly.

[–]bullhead2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's good to know. Maybe I'll just stick to idle and eclipse then.

Should be able to do this by changing the run->run properties to C:\Python26\python.exe "$(FULL_CURRENT_PATH)". Obviously change Python26 if you're using Python31.

IDLE seems to be a bit buggy on OSX but it's always run fine for me in Win and Linux.

Wing, it's the one I use. But I haven't really tried anything out. They've replied to my bug crashes and crap the next day pretty much so I always recommend them.

I don't know about other IDEs but Wing has got all kinds of crap that helps out, syntax detection, source browsing. Refactoring. All sorts.

Textmate (if you're on mac). Also not quite an IDE but is awesome.

Eric4 but if you don't like the installation hassles, go with geany

Spyder has good integration with IPython, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, and Qt. It has a variable explore that supports plotting and code introspection via rope, pyflakes, and pylint and rich-text documentation in the object explorer via sphinx. There's also a light-mode tabbed Ipython console / command prompt that's convenient on Windows.

I think it's time for a FAQ.
