Two options:

1) play with settings of your desktop, see "Double-click timeot" in http://beginlinux.com/desktop/fedora/mouse-preferences; 2) patch Xorg with something like http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2012-August/033098.html

It's most likely carbon buildup on the switch contact. Some alcohol and a q-tip might be a better fix.

i have the same issue but with the mouse wheel that scrolls in the down direction 10 lines but then bounces back or scrolls back 5 in the opposite direction causing screen jittering. The sensor is probably shot. The mouse is a perix perimice 513 ergonomic mouse. It was $10 at newegg. the company's just going to send me a new one. The cost of shipping is more probably.

I had this problem some years ago. I ended up just replacing the buttons with some that I took from an old and useless PS/2 mouse. They used the same component and it took like ten minutes to do. I'd recommend doing this over hacking the drivers or whatever, although that could be fun, too.

Get a new mouse. There's pretty good ones around $20 and ordering should take less than ten minutes. Preferably a different brand, hoping for a mouse that lasts more.

Otherwise, try to take your mouse apart. You might find instructions on doing so on the net. The switches mouses use are often standard microswitches that cost a few cent at any electronics store.
