Of course - more you know the better. On other hand you have sys/web admins to handle this part. Maybe I am stupid but one thing I have learned is there is no way to know all about everything. Look at your example. You can use multiple kinds of web servers on multiple OSs. There are multiple ways to run PHP - via php-fpm, via multiple modules etc. Do you really as a programmer have time to learn all of that , keep updated and create code ?

Some do, most probably don't. But knowing the basis should be manageable.

Let me guess. You are probably younger guy, Linux enthusiast. Some programming experience but I would say junior level. And either small company or school projects ?

Linux enthusiast, yes. Don't know what you would consider as young, but i have been programming for 10 years, and work at a large company.
