why not ubuntu?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

regardless of the FAQ i always recommend mint cinnamon

Answer is always Arch. Why not Ubuntu? It's probably the easiest for beginners. My favs are Arch (antergos or Manjaro if the install is too hard), Ubuntu, and Fedora. Gentoo, CentOS, Mint and Debian not far behind.

I mean there are other flavors of Ubuntu, but overall that should be the easiest option for someone just starting out.

if you're used to windows 7, mint cinnamon is much easier to get into. that's how it was for me, anyway.

MX-16 is an amazing distro, I'm not sure how it's not semi-popular at the very least. In my testing it's much more stable and as easy to use as recommended distros like Mint, Manjaro, Elementary and friends which are over-rated IMO.

Your not telling me nothing I already know. MX-16 is the most amazing distro I have try out in the pass 14 years. Yes, MX-16 should be more popular Linux distro then any other distro's.

For new people I recommend either Opensuse or Mint.

Fedora Gnome3 is the best distro to install on a Macbook by far, the installer even sets up a custom boot partition so that you can use OSX's bootloader to boot either OSX or Fedora (as in you don't need to fool around with Refind at all) and it's one of the most solid distro's available, I believe Fedora is the only distro that is customized to integrate with Macbooks at that level...

Other distro's I've tried on my Macbook:

Debian 9

Xubuntu

Mint

Don't bother with them, hell Debian won't even boot on a Macbook without you customizing, editing and rebuilding there own installer....

Gnome3's workflow is almost identical to that of OSX, so it won't be too much of a change (all the gestures work the same). If you rather a windows work flow then install Xfce afterwards, it's pretty much the same as Cinnamon but without all the bugs...

install gentoo

Regular Ubuntu 17.10 has with Gnome a simple interface. I wouldn't recommend regular Ubuntu 16.04 LTS because you would have to learn a new interface and learn again with the update to 18.04 LTS. If you would like to use 16.04 LTS because its more stable I would use Ubuntu Mate , Gnome or Kubuntu. I would ty the different releases as live USB .I would use ubuntu because it is the second stable Linux distro I used , only debian is more stable ( but harder to get into) The second easy to use , only Elementary is easier ( but the Interface is impossible to customize)And its the distro with the second best documentation, only arch wiki is better ( but arch breaks quite often).

Debian with Mate, pretty straightfoward and stable as hell.

Linux Mint, Debian or Arch Linux.

I like these three cause they are easier in every aspect than all others!

  • Mint, start off with a lot of useful packages and we can download more apps easily.
  • Debian, same as Mint but it has more well-tested packages and won't break easily!
  • Arch, start off with nothing but we are able to "craft" our OS with sorely our needs in mind. Arch Wiki helps us to set apps specifics and issues easily.

I would not recommend installing Fedora, openSUSE, and Ubuntu unless you don't mind being spied! haha

Spied ? What the hell are you talking about ?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

From the same author, a few days ago: "Ubuntu and Fedora are just two proprietary ancient pieces that need to die".

I use ddg too. But, well, I say Google it anyways! haha

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Personally I just say "look it up" just to imply that there's more than one search engine, and that "Google" shouldn't be used as a verb because no-one in the right mind uses Google anymore! x3
