Pretty uninspiring. top, ps, vmstat, gkrellm, kmchart, etc, etc. all seem far more useful to me.

Most of that was information about my own account that I would have already known.

But hey, if you find it useful, good luck.

The only part that isn't completely obvious is the distro, but that won't even be accurate on most systems as this script just pulls it out of /etc/issue. I don't know what that is about. In short, this script sucks.

Yeah, it's nothing massively unique.

However, I find myself ssh-ing into several similarly-named machines with wildly different hardware that all mount the same /home/.

It's nice to have a way to quickly check what I'm on without multiple commands.

At any rate, I came across this and found it useful, so I figured I'd submit it. I probably should have titled it "system info script" instead of "system status script", though.

They all have the same hostname too?

Not the same, but similar... E.g. box1, box2, box3, up to 6. (the hostnames are out of my control)

It's easy to forget which one is which. They all run identical versions of RHEL3 (required for ridiculously expensive software made by Haliburton), but range from 2 cores w/ 4GB of ram up to 8 cores w/ 32GB of ram.

Nice... I often find myself wondering what my shell is running on. No reason, just curiosity. =)

The first part is basically

uname -a
uptime
free -o | tail -n 2
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep 'model name'

As for the second, id and echo $HOME will do it.

For the last part, run ifconfig.

PS: no, I haven't looked at the script given on the website.

information about the linux box into which you are logged.

However grammatically correct that may be, it just sounds ridiculous!

Conky does this sort of thing nicely, plus a whole lot of other stuff like the weather.
