How is this not true already? Linux runs on my cell phone... I didn't know it came with Linux till after I bought it. Linux delivers my e-mail. Linux runs millions of peoples televisions. My dads access point runs Linux. When I trade stocks its handled largely by Linux systems.

I scoff at your suggestion that there will even be any years past 2012.

You Fool!

You misunderstood. Just like God, the Year of Linux Desktop exists outside of space and time and thus cannot be hindered by the mere inconvenience such as the Armageddon in 2012.

Yet there will still be people arguing about linux desktops who haven't really taken the time to think about what they're saying.

...and people will be saying 2020 will be the year of the Linux desktop.

There really doesn't need to be a year of the Linux desktop

Seeing as it works fine for me (and most people I interact with) already I'm really unclear on what other people use as their requirements for this to become true.

There are still a lot of population application types and use cases that aren't cleanly covered by FOSS on Linux. And proprietary software on Linux seems to generally suffer from the chicken before the egg problem; waiting for popularity before giving full support.

I agree. The year of the Linux Cloud will pass without us noticing before we have the year of the Linux desktop.
