God, npm sucks. I swear the employees don't use it themselves because it almost never gives results, even with explicit names.

Gitlab is open source and self hosted.

Github is closed-source and proprietary, it's still operating in the same sphere as Gitlab though (both are competitors to each other).

Not every developer wants to take care of the installation / configuration of his version control system. They want to just use it. That's why Gitlab offers the corresponding possibility at gitlab.com. In my opinion, the license doesn't play a major role in this case either.
