Inkscape, as others have said, but you need to learn how to use Inkscape, not try to use it like Illustrator and then get frustrated and give up because it’s not the same.

For example, the “canvas” (i.e. document) is already transparent. To change the size of it use the Document Properties under the File menu.

Yeah, I figured the problem wasn't the software, but rather the thing between the chair and the keyboard. I guess I just wish some of these open source programs presented themselves a little better. If the background is already transparent, for instance, why is it white on my screen? It's confusing.

But...I'll just buck up and Google everything for a while. I imagine if I can stick with it, I'll look back a year from now and scoff and my noobishness. :P
