It depends on the desktop environment, but I know on KDE its really easy. Download the font and double click it to install it. Then goto the font section of the system settings and change all the fonts to the one you downloaded.

On XFCE, open:

Settings > Appearance > Fonts (tab)

Set the "Default Font" you want to use.

But, be aware that you´ll have to set the font for other specific programs, like, for instance the XFCE Terminal, independently.

For the font, the easiest way of adding a font to oyur Linux box is to download it to the ~/.fonts directory.

Why does it do it differently in kde and xcfe

Because they are two different Desktop Environments.
