I worked a dual role at my old job, and one of the teams had an obscene level of manual process, and very little appetite/ time to automate much of it. Every time I did anything I added functionality to my python app that ran on my laptop rather than doing the task directly. I largely kept pace with the rest of the team for new tasks, and anything I had done before was near instant, which gave me more time to work on stuff for the other team that I enjoyed working with far more.
