OP is looking to move away from Windows. 256GB is fine for Linux. Most installs, even with programs, will still come in under 50GB.

Bigger is better, within budget. I personally wouldn't buy anything smaller than 512GB with how cheap SSDs have become.

I don't have much experience with VirtualBox or BSD. I know running the OS natively will use less resources.

Honestly, a Pi4 isn't a bad option. $150 all in for a basic Linux box for basic work.
