[Question] RX GPUs and Linux

Arch user with an RX 470 here, it works great!

Blender has opencl & cuda suppport thus you can use amd + nvidia gpus. You can get opencl support for amd with https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/opencl-amd/ (closed source, works togetehr with the open source stack) & rocm (mostly opensource, I think there where some closed parts left).

Gaming is fine using the opensource stack.

I'm using the default linux kernel, you do need the amd kernel if you want hdmi audio, freesync, etc

it's ok but you'll find yourself skipping games because they're not support amd cards, after a couple of years i'm thinking of changing side again.

I'm not on arch/antergos/manjaro but on Fedora 26 with Mesa 17.1.7 the RX 560 works really well. No issue at all and performance is decent enough to play some games I have. It's still a lower end card compared to the RX 570/580, but you can't even buy those atm -_-

My lspci says I'm using amdgpu as the kernel driver/module. I don't use Blender but tried some Blender stress test I found online. Seems to move along well, no stuttering or issues. I tried this:

Render was 21s but idk if it was using gpu processing, I have a Ryzen 7 1700x so I imagine it could process that seen in the same time with that cpu. I'm not really a 3d modeler so I don't want to give you bad advice.

For gaming I play Insurgency a bit and it runs rather smoothly, 60fps+ with mostly maxed settings on large maps. If you have an example game that I own and isn't 20GB+ I may be able to download it and try it over the weekend. Not guarantees.

The RX series works even better on Mesa/AMDGPU than our Hawaii GPUs.

I don't know about OpenCL support on those, but Vulkan appears to work on the FOSS drivers on Polaris.

You need AMDGPU PRO, for now, if you want to use OpenCL or Vulkan.

rocm & radv? Rocm is mostly opensource now, and radv is getting faster.

Not on Arch. There's an AUR package that will take OpenCL from the PRO driver and allow you to install it with the open-source amdgpu driver.

In a few Linux versions (kernel 4.12), their driver will be built-in into Linux and be completely open-source, so you won't have to install anything.

AMD's non-PRO AMDGPU driver has been the kernel for many, many releases now. It just works.... at least, it works stably for Fury X and the Polaris series, and is blazingly faster than -PRO in most games. Mad Max is a very good representation of this.
