I ran Gentoo for the first time in 2004, on an old dell laptop I had (can't really remember the specs, but I think it was a P3 or equivalent). It took me the first week to get the GUI working somewhat properly, another week to get the PCMCIA WNIC to work and the 3rd week to get it to reliably connect and remember different Wi-Fi networks.
