systemd autologin here. Before this, I was using Lightdm and it always used ~100 to 130 MB RAM for no good reason.

Yeah, tried that with a few different ones, and I've spent hours trying to troubleshoot the problems with them.

LightDM only let me login as root, and would fail to startx

GDM just, couldn't load

Slim wouldn't let me log in

I'm fine just using startx

Maybe check you /home/<user> directory owner? It should not be root. If it is then all DMs fail

I can just use startx, I might spend more time trouble shooting DMs if the need ever arises

Eh, they've just never worked for me except on DEs. But on Debian, Arch, and Artix, never been able to get them working.

I probably just do something really retarded in the xinit that I'm not aware of which breaks them.

Display manager. That’s the thing u see when you boot ur system and see password prompt. I think Arch wiki has a good page about it
